The Year of the Kid

Last night the Governor Tony Evers gave the 2025 State of the State Address. This marked the first State of the State address since the implementation of fair maps. This new legislative session has seen Democrats picking up picked up 10 seats in the Assembly and four in the Senate.

Governor Evers began the speech by recapping the previous year, which he had declared was the “Year of the Worker”. He highlighted the expansion of expand youth and registered apprenticeship programs, largest public-private investment in Wisconsin startups and entrepreneurs in state history and working with Senator Baldwin to designate Wisconsin as a Regional Tech Hub.

Looking forward Governor Evers declared 2025 to be "The Year of the Kid."

Here were some of his proposed polices throughout the speech:

Children and Education

  • Propose $300 million for mental health services in schools and suicide prevention programs.

  • Expand the "Healthy Meals, Healthy Kids" initiative, ensuring free school meals and modernizing water infrastructure in schools.

  • Invest $500 million to make the Child Care Counts program permanent and reduce childcare costs.

Healthcare and Safety

  • Propose a “Self-Assigned Firearm Exclusion” (SAFE) Program to help individuals in crisis prevent firearm purchases.

  • Restore a 48-hour waiting period for firearm purchases and pass a “red flag” law.

  • Allocate $66 million to support services for crime victims and establish the Wisconsin Office of Violence Prevention permanently.

  • Lower prescription drug costs through price caps and eliminate the sales tax on over-the-counter medications.

Infrastructure and Environment

  • Direct $5 million for water well contaminant cleanup and $6 million for lead poisoning response.

  • Continue Wisconsin’s focus on clean energy and climate change mitigation.

Other Key Policies

  • Oppose efforts to restrict reproductive healthcare access.

  • Advocate for immigration reform to support Wisconsin’s economy and workforce.

  • Commitment to vetoing legislation that undermines LGBTQ+ rights or inclusivity.
